What are the three modes of communication in a team?
The three modes in Chapter 2 are verbal, non-verbal and written communication. Verbal is huddles, check-ins and problem-solving sessions, rich in tone. Non-verbal is body language, eye contact and active listening, which leaders broadcast constantly. Written is email, documentation and standard procedures, the shared playbook for teams working in different places and times.
Chapter 2 describes effective communication not as a single activity but as a symphony of different modes working together. Each mode plays a distinct and vital role in a continuous improvement culture, and a weakness in any one of them can undo strength in the others. A clear email cannot repair a leader whose body language tells the team their input is not welcome.
- Verbal: the most immediate and personal mode, in daily huddles, one-on-one check-ins and team problem-solving sessions. You hear tone, inflection, passion and hesitation, not just words.
- Non-verbal: body language, eye contact and attention. Leaders are always on stage, and active listening, nodding, eye contact and saying "I see" or "tell me more", signals that a person matters.
- Written: emails, project documentation and standard operating procedures. Clear, concise writing is the backbone of knowledge sharing and standardisation, especially for remote and distributed teams.
The leadership test differs by mode. Verbally, speaking with humility and genuine curiosity, asking questions instead of just giving answers, creates space for others. Non-verbally, saying you value input while crossing your arms, sighing and looking out of the window communicates the opposite, more loudly than words. In writing, structured tools such as SBAR bring the same discipline to the page.
