What's the difference between critical thinking and being critical?
Chapter 9 does not draw this exact contrast as a named distinction, so this answer stays with its definition. Critical thinking tests ideas and evidence: asking questions, checking assumptions, and following facts to a sound judgement. The chapter's opposite examples are blame and jumping to conclusions, where a person is faulted before the real cause is examined.
Be clear about the limit first: the chapter defines critical thinking carefully, but it does not set out a separate definition of "being critical" to compare it with. What follows is drawn only from that definition and the chapter's own examples.
On that definition, critical thinking is directed at the idea, the evidence, and your own assumptions. It is the disciplined art of asking the right questions, weighing evidence without bias, and making judgements based on reason rather than gut feeling or habit. It includes the humility to question yourself and the courage to follow the facts.
The behaviour the chapter contrasts with that approach is blame. In its factory case, a machine kept jamming and the first instinct was to blame a long serving operator and put him on notice. A 5 Whys inquiry found the real cause: a maintenance schedule designed for a one shift operation, while the machine ran three shifts. The breakdowns stopped when the lubrication cycle was adjusted, and the operator became part of the solution.
The culture markers point the same way. In a thinking culture, people feel safe to challenge ideas, including the leader's, in pursuit of the best outcome, and a challenger is thanked. Mistakes lead to a blameless review about what was learned. The test is the work and the evidence, not the person who happened to be nearest the problem.
